If you’re moving to Hungary it will be important to obtain the right visa. The right visa for you depends on the reason you’re moving to Hungary, your nationality and how long you intend to stay in Hungary. So where can I find more information about visas in Hungary? You should apply for your short term stay visa in person at the Hungarian embassy. You’ll need to fill out this form and bring it with you to the Hungarian embassy. The application forms for a stay longer than 3 months (seasonal employment, residence permit etc.) and other documents are available on the website of the Hungarian National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing.

Can I become a Hungarian Citizen?

Can I become a Hungarian citizen? Yes, there are several ways of acquiring Hungarian nationality. You can become a Hungarian citizen with all the accompanying rights through either naturalization, marriage, or birth. You may apply to be naturalized as a Hungarian citizen after 8 years continuous residence in Hungary if they:

  • have no criminal past at all,
  • have a stable livelihood,
  • are of good character, and
  • pass a test in basic constitutional studies.

It is possible to be naturalized after 5 years residence in Hungary if someone is:

  • born in Hungary, or
  • established residence in Hungary before age 18, or
  • are stateless.

It is possible to be naturalized after 3 years residence in Hungary if someone is:

  • spouses of Hungarian citizens who have been married for three years (or who are widows or widowers),
  • parents of Hungarian citizen minor children,
  • persons adopted by Hungarian citizens, or
  • recognised refugees.

You may apply to be naturalized if they are:

  • spouses of Hungarian citizens who have been married for at least ten years, or
  • spouses of Hungarian citizens who have been married for at least five years and they have a child together, and
  • able to provide proof of proficiency in the Hungarian language.

Also Hungary allows its citizens to hold foreign citizenship in addition to their Hungarian citizenship. So you won’t lose your other citizenship.
